Matteo Tanel and Tommaso Dellagiacoma in Val di Fiemme to win the Cup
After the results in Madona (LAT) Italy men’s team obtains the first 4 ranking positions
Among the junior, Anna Maria Ghiddi soar to the conquest of the trophy
At the final appointment, from September 8th to 10th, around thirty Italian athletes registered
The final of the Roller Skiing World Cup is now just around the corner and, up there on the roof of the world on the slopes of the Alpe Cermis, in Val di Fiemme, the Italian flag will soon be waving again. From September 8th to 10th, there is at stake the prestigious trophy between two Italian special athletes, two friends who follow the same dream. On the one hand, there is Matteo Tanel from South Tyrol, holder of the yellow bib after the gold medal won in the 15 km CT and the silver medal in the Mass Start 20 km FT in the penultimate stage of Madona (LAT). On the other hand, Tommaso Dellagiacoma from Trentino, who is in second place at only eight points from the leader. Italy currently dominates the World Cup also with the third place of Emanuele Becchis, who extends his lead in the Sprint classification, thus securing the first historical speciality Cup, and at the foot of the podium the athlete from Trentino Michele Valerio.
Mass Start, Sprint and again Mass Start Uphill “Cermis Final Climb”: here is the menu of the fantastic Trentino’s weekend, reserved for the Junior and senior categories that will hold everyone with bated breath until the final climb on the Cermis. In Ziano di Fiemme, Friday 8th September, starting from 3 pm, the Mass Start 10 and 15 km FT will take place. After that the exciting Sprint FT will unfold in the afternoon of Saturday 9th with the finals scheduled for 5:15 pm, while the showdown will be Sunday 10th, starting from 9:30 am, on the spectacular climb in classic technique to the intermediate station Doss dei Laresi of Alpe Cermis.
For the 'home' appointment, the TD of the Italian national team, Michel Rainer, intends to field a 'big squad' of around 30 athletes. The official list of the summoned has not been released yet, but Rainer anticipates: “The summoned for the races in Fiemme are all those of the national team, then there will be surely some new athlete, among those who raced at the Junior World Championships, as Segafredo. Then I will bring some other young junior athlete, among those who did not qualify for the World Championships but who still performed well in the Coppa Italia races, we will let them participate to gain experience. Regarding the senior, among the women we will bring Eugenia Boccardi, who won in Lavarone, then Laura and Alba Mortagna. Therefore, it will be a great delegation with around thirty athletes, to make a good presence and also try to bring home as much as we can. These are roughly the names. In the sprint of Val di Fiemme I would like to bring Matthias Morandini, placed third at the Italian Championships of Lissone. The two Bolzan will not be missing, Anna will do the sprint and Elisa all the races, so with also Sordello and Boccardi we will have also a good women’s team. Among the foreigners, I saw that there will be the Norwegian Korsaeth and many more, so the level will be very high. We will be there from Wednesday, with all the technicians and the entire staff.”
There is also the Junior Anna Maria Ghiddi aiming for the category Cup with 647pts, almost certain since the immediate pursuer is Kazakhstan's Gerachshenko at 497pts. Among the senior, however, Sweden's Linn Sömskar is flying towards winning the Cup, with Italy's Elisa Sordello currently in fifth place.
As of today, 14 nations are registered for the Cup Final: Norway with, among others, Amund Korsaeth (winner of the 2022 trophy) then Italy, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Slovenia, Sweden, Liechtenstein, Kazakhstan, Taipei, Ukraine, Romania and Slovakia.
Worth mentioning, is the promotional race Fiemme Roller Ski Cup-Cermis Final Climb on Sunday 10th September that will anticipate the competition of the “bigs” starting at 9 am.
